Microsoft’s own twelve-item performance list runs close to the reverse of common advice: restart is last, installing updates is first. And the "keep 10-15% free" figure appears in no vendor document, so we removed it.

Intel's document gives an order: reduce the clock speed first, shut down only if that fails. And Microsoft's six steps contain no heat item at all.
