Many homes bring out an electric blanket in winter. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service in the UK says check it before use for scorch marks, visible wires, frayed fabric, a damaged cord, or a control that buzzes or smells, and don’t use it with a hot water bottle, or when it’s wet or folded. Have it checked by a qualified technician every three years and never buy second-hand. To store it, let it cool, then loosely fold or roll it and keep it somewhere cool and dry. This sets out the Essex Fire page “Electric blanket safety”.
1. Check it first — scorch marks, visible wires, frayed fabric, cord damage, a buzzing or smelly control.
2. No hot water bottle with it; don’t use it wet or folded; don’t use an underblanket as an overblanket.
3. A technician check every three years; never buy second-hand — if in doubt, ask the manufacturer.

Questions that remain
How many years before I replace it?
This page gives no replacement age. Its line is a check every three years, and asking the manufacturer if you see danger signs or are in doubt.
Does this apply to Korean heated mats?
This is UK fire service guidance on electric blankets. We didn’t read Korean standards for heated mats this time, so check the product manual too.
