Cervical Spondylosis Exercises — NHS inform: 6 Neck Exercises (Head Turn, Tilt, Lying Stretch and Strengthening), Stretches 20 to 30 Seconds, Up to 2 Sets of 15

Diagnosed with cervical spondylosis — a stiff, painful neck from wear in the neck bones and discs with age — and wondering what exercise to do? NHS inform, the health information site run by NHS 24 in Scotland, sets out 6 exercises for people diagnosed with cervical spondylosis, with videos (2 minutes 32 seconds in total, our sum). Four sitting or standing movements — head turn, head tilt, forward head tilt and a wide shoulder stretch — are joined by two neck exercises done lying on a bed. Start with 2 to 3 repetitions and build to a maximum of 2 sets of 15, hold stretches for 20 to 30 seconds, and get advice if there is no improvement within 6 weeks. Here it is as written.

1. Six exercises — head turn, head tilt, forward head tilt, wide shoulder stretch, plus neck stretch and strengthening in lying.
2. Start at 2 to 3 → 8 × 2 sets, 2 to 3 times a day → up to 2 sets of 15. Stretches: 20 to 30 seconds, 2 to 3 sets.
3. Pain within 0 to 5; stop if worse or new pain; get advice if no better within 6 weeks.

WhyGetting movement and strength back supports tissue healing and gets you moving. You may not return to usual levels straight away and progress may be slow at first, but a gradual return to normal activities gives the best short and long term results—
At firstListen to your pain, especially early on. Symptoms may increase slightly at first but should get easier. Prescribed medicine from a GP or pharmacist may help you keep exercising—
SafetySomewhere safe, only if you feel well enough; stop at once if you feel unwell. First time? Read the guidance below first—

“Wear in the neck bones and discs” is our gloss. This page doesn’t explain the condition; it only gives the exercises.

Questions that remain

Which ones are the stretches?

The page says some videos are labelled stretching exercises but doesn’t say which in the text. ④ and ⑤, with “stretch” in the name, read that way — our reading.

What if my arm tingles or feels weak?

This page doesn’t list such signs. It only says stop if exercise causes new pain, so with arm tingling or weakness, get checked before exercising (ours).

How high a pillow?

⑤ says “head supported by a cushion” and sets no height.
