How to Read Supplement Labels: Not All Magnesium Absorbs the Same

You're buying magnesium and see "magnesium oxide" next to "magnesium glycinate." Same mineral — so why the different names? Because the chemical form changes how much you actually absorb, and how badly your stomach reacts. Learning to read the label saves money and gets better results.

The key: form matters more than the mg number

The trap. The "500mg" on the label may be the weight of the whole compound, not the mineral itself. The elemental amount (the actual mineral) can be much smaller — and how much you absorb varies by form. A bigger number isn't better.

Magnesium — where form matters most

A common mistake: taking lots of magnesium oxide and just running to the bathroom. If absorption is the goal, glycinate or citrate is usually the better pick.

Iron — if stomach upset is a problem

  • Bisglycinate (chelated) — well absorbed, with less stomach upset and constipation
  • Ferrous sulfate — cheap and widely used, but stomach upset and constipation are common
  • Absorption tip — take with vitamin C to boost absorption. Avoid taking it with coffee, tea (tannins), or calcium, which reduce it

Zinc — chelated forms absorb better

Chelated forms (picolinate, glycinate) generally absorb better than zinc oxide. Taking zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea, so with food is often easier.

Vitamin D — pick D3

D3 (cholecalciferol) raises blood levels more effectively than D2. And since vitamin D is fat-soluble, take it with a meal containing fat. Taking it on an empty stomach wastes it.

Combinations to avoid

Minerals compete for absorption. Swallowing them all at once means they get in each other's way.

  • Calcium ↔ Iron — calcium blocks iron absorption. Space them apart
  • Zinc ↔ Copper — long-term high-dose zinc can cause copper deficiency
  • Iron ↔ Coffee/tea — coffee right after a meal reduces iron absorption
  • Iron + Vitamin C — this one is a good pairing

⚠️ More is not better

Overdoing it is harmful.

  • Iron — accumulates in the body and can damage organs. Don't take it long-term without testing
  • Zinc — high doses long-term can cause copper deficiency and impair immunity
  • Magnesium — excess from supplements causes diarrhea; risky if you have kidney disease
  • Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K) — they build up in the body rather than being flushed out

Checklist before buying

  • ✅ Check the form (glycinate, citrate, chelated…)
  • ✅ Is the elemental amount listed?
  • ✅ Have you confirmed you're actually low with a test?
  • ✅ Any interaction with your medications? (ask a pharmacist)
  • ❌ Don't be seduced by "high potency"
