How Korean severance is calculated

Severance = average daily wage × 30 days × (days of service ÷ 365)

The key figure is your average daily wage — total wages over the last 3 months divided by the number of days in that period.

  • Average daily wage = (wages over last 3 months) ÷ (days in that period)
  • Bonus — 3/12 of the last 12 months' bonuses is added to the base
  • Unused leave pay — likewise, 3/12 is added

Things to know

  • You need at least 1 year of continuous service to qualify.
  • If your average wage is lower than your ordinary wage, the higher one is used (in your favor).
  • Excluded periods (e.g. parental leave) can change the calculation.
  • If your company uses a DC-type retirement pension, the calculation differs.
This calculator includes bonuses and leave pay for a closer estimate, but your actual payout depends on your pay structure.
