Damp Monsoon Air and Mold — Control Humidity and It's Over

Damp Monsoon Air and Mold — Control Humidity and It's Over

During Korea's monsoon season the air indoors turns damp and clammy. Laundry won't dry, and one day black mold appears behind the wardrobe or on the window frame. Mold isn't just ugly — it can trigger allergies and respiratory symptoms.

The key is simple: mold feeds on humidity. Control indoor humidity and most of the problem disappears.

Target 50–60% indoor humidity. Mold multiplies readily above 60%. Start by putting a hygrometer where you can see it.

1. Lowering humidity — what actually works

  • A dehumidifier is the most reliable. Run it with the door closed for efficiency.
  • Air-conditioner dry mode works well too. If the electricity bill worries you, see how to cut air-conditioner costs.
  • Ventilate briefly on rainy days rather than throwing windows wide — when outdoor humidity is higher, long airing brings moisture in.
  • Put desiccants in closets and shoe cabinets, and leave 5–10cm between furniture and walls so air can move.

2. Three places mold loves

  • Bathroom — wipe water away after showering and run the fan 20–30 minutes longer. Silicone seams are especially vulnerable.
  • Window frames and wall corners — where condensation collects. Wipe them often with a dry cloth.
  • Behind wardrobes and built-ins — no airflow. Open doors occasionally and don't pack clothes tightly.

3. Removing mold that's already there

  • Tile and silicone — spray remover and cover with paper towel so it doesn't run off; rinse thoroughly afterward.
  • Wallpaper and furniture — bleaching agents can leave marks, so test somewhere hidden first and check once dry.
  • Safety firstnever mix chlorine-based mold remover with acidic cleaners. It creates toxic gas. Always ventilate and wear gloves.

4. Drying laundry in the rainy season

  • Hang items with wide gaps and aim a fan or circulator at them — much faster.
  • Running a dehumidifier near the laundry dries clothes and the room at once.
  • Hang immediately after washing; damp clothes left sitting are what cause that sour smell.

FAQ

Windows open or closed when it rains?

If outdoor humidity is higher than indoors, ventilate only briefly. You need air exchange, but long airing lets moisture in.

Do charcoal or coarse salt help?

They help in small spaces (shoe cabinets, drawers) but can't lower a whole room's humidity. For that, use a dehumidifier or AC.

I smell mold but can't see it.

Check hidden spots — behind furniture, under wallpaper, beneath the mattress. The smell means moisture is trapped somewhere.

Eighty percent of mold control is "keep humidity under 60%." A dehumidifier, a bathroom fan and some spacing make summer far more comfortable.

This is general household information. If respiratory or allergy symptoms persist, consult a doctor; for widespread mold, call a professional service.
