Your credit score follows you when a loan rate is set, when a mortgage or jeonse loan is reviewed, even for some card approvals. But "how do I raise it?" feels vague. The good news: a few habits steadily lift it.
Korea uses a score system (1–1,000), not the old grades. Two bureaus — NICE (NICE Jikimi) and KCB (Allcredit) — each calculate one, and you can check both free.
Most important: never be late
Delinquency is the biggest drag on your score. Even a few days late can drop it sharply and take time to recover.
- Put card bills, loan interest, phone and utility bills on autopay to eliminate late payments.
- Even a small overdue amount counts — don't let anything slip.
Keep card usage low vs. your limit
Maxing your card limit signals cash pressure. Keeping usage under ~30–40% of your limit helps. If you spend a lot, raise the limit or split across cards.
Earn points with non-financial data
Submitting a record of on-time phone, utility and insurance payments earns bonus points. Register via NICE/KCB apps under "non-financial info (bonus points)"; about 6+ months of autopay history is reflected.
Habits to avoid
- Frequent cash advances / card loans — read as a cash-crunch signal.
- Leaning on second-tier lenders first — banks are better, all else equal.
- Closing old cards — long-held cards build history; don't cancel just because they're idle.
Note: checking refinancing rates repeatedly does not affect your score. "Checking = penalty" is outdated.
FAQ
Does just checking lower my score?
No. Your own free checks don't affect it — check as often as you like.
How long until it rises?
Habits usually reflect over a few months. No delinquency plus steady management is the fastest path.
Why do NICE and KCB differ?
Their criteria differ slightly. Lenders use different bureaus, so manage both.
Eighty percent of your score is simply "don't be late." Block missed payments with autopay and keep card usage low, and it mostly rises on its own.
This is general information; scoring criteria vary by bureau and time. Confirm details with NICE or KCB.
